Claims to the Waitangi Tribunal


Tainui o Tainui lodged two claims to the Waitangi Tribunal.

The original WAI125 claim was submitted by Haami Kereopa to the Waitangi Tribunal in 1989, and registered in 1990.

The WAI2660 Marine and Coastal Act (Takutai Moana) claim was lodged by Angeline Greensill in April 2017.

A case was also lodged with the High Court under the Marine and Coastal Act, but will not be heard until 2027.

In 2011, amendments to the original statements of claim were submitted to the Waitangi Tribunal.

Tainui, Ngai Tainui, Ngati Tainui, Tainui Awhiro,and recently Tainui o Tainui have been used to identify the Tainui hapū of Whaingaroa/Raglan.

 

The Tainui hapu ki Whaingaroa is made up of Ngāti Koata (ki Whaingaroa), Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Tahau, Ngāti Te Kore, Ngāti Pūkoro, Ngāti Te Ikaunahi, Ngāti Tira, Ngāti Heke, Ngāti Rua Aruhe, Ngāti Hounuku, Te Paetoka and Ngāti Karu hapu.
