RAKAUNUI

Poihakena Marae was established at Wahanui  on Rakaunui Block 2B1 between 1956 – 1960 to provide a gathering place for Tainui whanau and hapu following the destruction in 1941 of Miria Te Kakara  wharenui at Te Kopua.  In the 1970’s the Raglan County Council  built an oxidation pond on a wahi tapu, te Rua o Te Ataiorongo.  In 1978, during a  sacred  ceremony at Te Kopua urupa to deal with this breach of tapu 17 people throughout the Motu were arrested  for trespass.

There are several Ahu whenua Trusts  and land blocks at Rakaunui.
